So, reading the Gift-Giver's hint for image 12, "Don't minimize the obvious", the obvious grey giant is the gray giant lady in the painting.
Image 12 in the book has the "gray square" obscured by Russian orthodox church. Gray square hint would tie in with the Liberty head and square clock nicely.
Gray, square,... these are definitions for boring, dull, and unexciting. Next to the gray square is the "Lady Liberty" and next to her is the "Times Square", named after The NY Times.

So, square, gray, Lady Liberty, and Times Square, all together make the "grey giant" the lady in the painting.

The next step is to concentrate on the shadow of her, next to her right arm, and what one can find in it. There are many hints hidden within the shadow. Hammer and sickle, or sword and pruning hook, even a dragon clutching pearl flag draped on her.
