What’s your theory on the motivation behind the data mining?

OCD. Or maybe the Forum self-destructs when any one thread hits half-a-million views and they are just hurrying it along. Most likely though, it's a ham-handed attempt to drive up server costs so Mark pulls the plug himself. Annoying Mark Parry with petty grievances has been part of the playbook for a while now, so this is just a continuation of that strategy.
You seem like you have an excellent sense of humor… I dig it!

Thank you, Sarah. The absurdity of the situation is not lost on us.

I'm not a registered member of FB. Sometimes members here refer to FB posts that are in private forums or images with links that won't work for non-members.
But it's fun to checkout the SF public forum on FB. In case you don't understand what PUBLIC means it means you don't have to be a member or "do" FB. It's like a comedy channel with no cohesion and many reruns. A few drunk kung fu shows too. Kinda like here!!!

click...click...click

Someone or something has been obsessively viewing this page. Almost a quarter of a million views since last August. That's almost a thousand views a day or about 5 times the average for the second most popular thread, which changes from day to day. So, as a public service, I'm bumping it to the top of the list, where a thread with 305,270 views belongs.
You're welcome.

There's been 5000 more hits in the last 3.5 days on half a page of random comments... no new information at all. The speed is increasing. Yet, nothing on other threads. Really get's the noggin' joggin'.

I guess people have more time on their hands these days. Especially in Europe. Watch the French searchers for breaking news!
Also forums with educational POV may send their bored kids over to checkout the craziness!
Also recent local TV news programs about illegal digging and rumors of treasure in Milwaukee and other town may attract attention.

This would be a rational thought, except for all the other threads in this forum have only a couple hundred hits, if that, in the last few days

The post about a couple caught digging in Milwaukee (newsworthy on all fronts), only has a hundred.

But this one thread in particular, which has largely been halfway down the page and only contains you and renovator sparring for a couple posts, has over five thousand in that time period.

I'm quite certain people aren't coming here to check out the craziness and find out about the Milwaukee pair by singly and solely clicking on a thread about San Francisco's image that is halfway down the page. Any other ideas?

I often see Google, Bing, Alexa bots here. I wonder if their visit is counted.
Back to my original point. Since this forum became public more and more visitors checkout the site. SF is the most popular thread for obvious reasons; cause we're cool!
And those pesky FB researchers!

So your theory is that everybody comes here, in the thousands each day, to click on a single thread and no others?

One visitor could potentially add 100's of views per day without knowing. If someone is going through the old pages and click on the links within and if their browser is set to open in the same window then when they refresh or come back to the window, it counts as another view. It adds up.

Yes.
without knowing

Not a chance. Almost at 311K. Click, click, click... The march continues.
It adds up.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

You two and your conspiracy theories are getting old. If someone wants to crash a site or make it costly for the owner they could simply download a free denial of service app from dark web and add a million clicks in an hour rather than sitting on their ass and click 5000 times in 3 days.
You two are the primary bunch of suspects tho. As Confucius said: He who smelt it dealt it.

June 8th 1898, a Coat of Arms was approved by the Executive Council as a Royal Warrant granted by Queen Elizabeth II.
The flower on the shield was a B. blakeana as the city's official flower , with a lion holding a pearl in its hand, and the official name of the colonial city at the bottom
as the British called it "Sweet scent of smell at the port of harbour"
forever remembered as,
Hong Kong / Pearl of the Orient
