Yeah, pretty much everyone makes excuses for an unsuccessful dig these days, Eric. That's not the problem with this solve IMO.

once you understand the significant of that symbol, you'll see the image in it's true form. It should be your first moment.
Then the theme and the patterns will all make sense and connect , even if you can't see the map, the Verse will bring you there, so as long as you do it step by step, you don't need a google map, you don't need a wikipedia, all you need is a functional brain. There's a way to pair the Verses with the Paintings without even knowing which is which, once you figured out the method, everything will be as easy as ABC and 123, you don't have to be in SF to enjoy it, it's a wheelchair treasure hunt. It's supposed to be easy, this is not National Treasure, we don't have to take out a 100 dollar bill with a bottle of water to see the 2:22. BP made everything "too Secret", he overestimated his readers intelligence quotient.

What would be of interest is that the clues do not stop with the book. Outside influence from art and history do play a big role, but limited in some way. Byron's goal was that a teenager in a wheelchair at their local library could solve the puzzle in a way that they could send in a precise location.

Fairmont/Stanford Court solution is pretty solid. I posted the stonewall's picture in this forum before and all I got was mockery.
I also posted the "Twain's attention" image on this thread (last page). The word attention must be intensional to mean something i.e. "Attention Walmart shoppers!", it "alerts" you to something. Attention, alert, alarm, alarm clock (in painting), fire alarm (bell). To get to the alarm/call box from the stonewall you have to cross the street eastward then north. That makes jewel's direction EAST (NYC). Fire alarm bell and cable car bell are similar and shown as alarm clock bell. Similarly, cable car and red call box's silhouettes are shown as table leg.
History of Fairmont Hotel is bookend connection to NYC puzzle, United Nations. The hotel also burned down after the 1906 SF quake.
Twain's connection, as our Quadriga member Canuck pointed out is the real Tom Sawyer, a firefighter.

Here's a period image of the University Club building. That rose colored giant step looking base of the building is prominently displayed over the rose in painting 1.
Vines are also covering portions of the wall.
Bookend puzzles are UN related. un and uc are present in the book in a single drawing with Chinese and Russian theme.
